What is a Half Round Gutter?

half-round-gutter

1/2 Round Aluminum Gutter

Half round gutters are a good choice for some homes. Half round gutters look just like they sound: a round tube cut in half. But since this is the classic gutter style used for centuries in Europe and America, half-round (1/2 round) gutters are standard or proper etiquette for many prestige custom homes. Usually when you see a stunning copper gutter system, it will feature the classic half-round profile. Thus half-round rain gutters are primarily used in custom homes and, nationally, account for about 10 percent of the gutter market.

Yet half-round gutters are now such a prestige item that manufacturers have developed roll-forming machines to make half-round gutters out of aluminum. Thus the half-round style is migrating into the mid-range housing market as an “upgrade” item. With their classic simplicity, the half-round profile goes with virtually any style of home architecture. And in contrast to copper half-rounds that are installed with semicircular wraparound hangers, the aluminum variety is slightly altered so that installers can use the same standard hangers they use for ordinary K-style gutters.

As for the performance of half-round gutters, there is some debate. Some say that a rounded profile won’t hold as much water as the more squared-off K-style gutter. But others believe that, while a K-style gutter the water spreads to the outer edges of the squared-off trough, as a rounded profile directs water to the bottom point of the trough and thus improves flow.

Below are Common Problems Caused by Poor Gutters or Clogged Gutter Systems:
The amount of cleaning and maintenance that you will have to perform to keep your gutters working properly will certainly be lessened when you have the Gutter Helmet installed on your home. However, there also exist a number of threats to your home that the Gutter Helmet can help to prevent. The leaks that can develop within regular gutters as well as the overflow of water from them make the Gutter Helmet an even more desirable choice.

When gutters are clogged with leaves, pine needles and other debris, they cease to function properly and can spill water from their sides. Even when they are maintained multiple times a year, with a heavy enough rainfall or high enough winds, water can accumulate quickly enough to pose a threat to your home. As moisture falls to the ground and runs down the outer walls of your home, the chances of mold and mildew growing increases a great deal. Not only are these fungi unattractive on any type of siding, they can lead to rot, structural damage and paint degradation.

Mold and mildew are also known to cause health problems. They especially aggravate people with hypersensitive respiratory systems, such as those afflicted with asthma or chronic nasal drip. Mildew and mold, in combination with water leaks, can eat away at the foundations of a home and wear away basement walls. Excess groundwater moisture can also lead to stress on a foundation from the freezing and expanding of soil in the winter.

Avoid gutter problems by having your gutters cleaned regularly or replacing poor, inoperable gutter systems. Protecting Your WNC Home with Rain Gutters and Gutter Guards

gutter-guardsHomeowners in the heavily wooded and rainy areas of WNC and Asheville almost certainly need rain gutters and some type of fitted gutter guard device to keep from clogging gutter systems. Rain gutters help safely channel water away from your home so as not to cause damage to roof, fascia, siding and landscape.  If you’re getting rain water coming off your roof and into doorways during heavy rains or experiencing a wet basement, you probably need gutters installed or your existing gutter system is clogged with leaves and not functioning properly.

Do I need a Gutter Cover System?
There are many type of gutter covers on the market, and while all of these gutter leaf guards boast similar benefits; they differ in 3 main ways:
1. Some gutter protection systems have a rounded nose that directs water into a narrow longitudinal gap. Others have louvered slots or perforated openings.
2. Some gutter leaf guards are designed to mount onto new or existing rain gutters. Others are complete systems with rain gutter included.
3. How they fit with the roof. Some gutter covers simply slide under the first or second course of shingles; others must be glued or nailed to the roof.

Which Gutter Protection system is the Best?
While each of the gutter guards on the market has some distinct benefits, only Gutter Helmet has been time tested for over 25 years and is guaranteed to protect your rain gutters for the life of your home. Gutter Helmet was the first, the original solid gutter cover ever designed in the late 60’s. The multipatented system has been perfected and improved over the years and has evolved into the best gutter system in America as rated by HomeTime’s Dean Johnson. See for yourself why more homeowners install a Gutter Helmet system than any other gutter guard system.

How is Gutter Helmet Different from Other Gutter Protection Systems?

The difference between Gutter Helmet lies in the patented design and overall effectiveness of the product. Gutter Helmet has been time tested over twenty five years. That’s why we are ranked as America’s best and25years #1 gutter protection system. Most gutter cover products use a screen with vertical openings or foam. These small openings in the screen collect small debris such as pine needles, and tree droppings that can clog the holes in the gutter cover and keep them from working effectively at capturing rain water.

Gutter Helmet’s multi-patented solid gutter cover design has no small openings making it impossible for small debris to enter your gutters or clog the cover. Gutter Helmet’s design uses “surface tension”, to draw water into a small slit on the side of the helmet, while pushing leaves around, over and down.  To see surface tension at work, hold a water glass under a running faucet and watch it run over the curved surface of the glass. The water flows around the outside of the glass. Leaves and debris fall to the ground, while water surface tension causes water to flow around the exclusive lid design and into your gutters where it can drain away from your home.

Got Overflowing and Clogged Gutters?

Do you have a problem with your gutters backing up or overflowing?

Gutter problems arise when you have clogged gutters.  The culprit causing the clog is usually leaves and tree debris. Instead of flowing harmlessly into your downspouts, rainwater backs up. Some will flow over the front edge of the gutter, dumping on your shrubs and bushes, and endangering your foundation. Some rainwater spills over the back of the gutter, saturating your eaves, soffit and other wooden framework. This dampness can lead to mold and mildew, which causes wood to rot and decay.

Gutter Helmet solid aluminum gutter covers prevent this buildup of water because no debris ever enters in gutters, and water always flows freely down the gutter into the downspout. The professional at Gutter Helmet of WNC  in Asheville can help.

Will Gutter Helmet install over my cedar shake roof?

Yes, in most cases Gutter Helmet will install just fine on cedar shake roofs. Our trained Gutter Helmet installers will add an aluminum extension panel, in a similar color, to extend under the second row of shakes. This allows for a more secure and effective installation. Our sales representative needs to assess the condition of your

shake roof to determine whether or not we can do a successful installation. Shakes that are overtaken with mold and mildew, or have great degrees of curl / warping, prevent us from installing Gutter Helmet properly. If they are remedied, or replaced prior to our installation, then the install can proceed as scheduled.

Cleaning Clogged Gutter Downspouts

Tips for Cleaning Clogged Gutter Downspouts

If you’ve managed to get through the task of cleaning out clogged gutters, then the next step is to make sure that the downspouts run freely. If they don’t, you probably have a blockage in the downspout itself. Try dislodging it by running a hose down the spout. The water pressure shouldn’t be too strong—you don’t want to blow it up. If it’s still tight, use a plumbing snake to clear it.

If there are angled joints, you may need to remove the downspout from the gutter to clear it. If you break a seal, clean the old caulk off with a wire brush and then apply silicone caulk to reseal. Reattach the clean, sealed downspout. Install downspout strainers to trap debris so you can clean it easily and prevent knots of debris from blocking them. Cleaning gutters and downspouts is something most homeowners dread doing.

Installing Your Own Gutters: Pros & Cons

copper-gutters-ashevilleIf you’re thinking of installing your own gutters, read one. Most full-service home improvement stores in the Asheville, Hendersonville, Flat Rock area, sell “do it yourself” gutter systems. If you’re comfortable with hand tools, assembling and installing gutters shouldn’t present any great challenge, but the job isn’t for everyone. It requires that you know how to safely work from ladders (good balance and staying within your reach) and are comfortable doing it. Be sure to rent scaffolding for second-floor gutter work because it’s much safer than using a ladder. If you’re not up the challenge, you can always call your WNC gutter installation experts at Gutter Helmet and get high quality, long lasting seamless aluminum gutters installed in no time. A trained technician can be reached at 828.681.5555.gutterman

Installing your own gutters can save you some money, but there are a few pitfalls to watch out for.  Be sure to inspect the fascia and soffit for signs of rotted wood, which will need to be replaced before you put up the gutters. Many houses have a trim board or crown molding nailed to the fascia just under the shingles. You’ll have to either remove this or add a continuous strip of wood under it to create a flat plane for the gutters.

You also want to be sure to install downspouts in unobstructed, inconspicuous area where water can be directed away from the house. And to prevent water from running behind your gutters, you’ll want to install metal gutter apron flashing under the shingles and over the back edge of the gutter.

Most homeowners would rather call a trained professional, who knows what to look for and can help you avoid the pitfalls associated with installing your own system. The friendly folks at Gutter Helmet offers  5” and 6” seamless gutters in a wide array of colors as well as 6.5″ round copper gutters.

Call today for a free, no hassle estimate on your gutter installation project throughout WNC. 828-681-5555 or visit www.nevercleanyourgutters.com. We install gutters throughout Asheville, Hendersonville, Flat Rock, Waynesville, Cashiers, Fletcher, Fairview and the greater WNC area.
